An epic struggle for power, glory and redemption. Two magnificent cats battle in the squared circle for the heavyweight championship of the world. Millions of Lolcats have followed in their wake, but these two combatants can always claim the title of the FIRST Lolcats!
Thomas Edison, who would later produce "The Great Train Robbery", began his film company with films such as these, that amounted to no more than a brief performance of an athlete or a dancer. Here, he had Professor Welton bring his cats into the studio to be filmed doing a boxing match that for its time must've made a lot of money; imagine what a hit it was. While I personally don't find it quite as interesting as other films I've seen from Edison, I do recommend as it is interesting to see how Edison combined his genre of boxing match films with cats.
Mr. Welton, the owner, stands behind the little ring as the cats go at it, pawing and hissing at each-other. Who wins? We don't find out, but as the film ends we see the gray-and-white cat rise up over the other cat, as though he is about to jump right on him. I suppose you could call that an early example of suspense in film. Anyway, if this was a big hit, it's easy to understand why. You could say it's an addition to the boxing genre that Edison started with his "Men Boxing". And I suppose it's interesting historically. So if you're new to the first films this one is as good a place as any to start. It
